✨ MEET OUR 2024 PRODUCTION TEAM! ✨

Sydney Petersen (they/them), is a visual artist and producer from Seattle. They had their first encounter with the Art Shanties on White Bear Lake while taking a media class at Macalester. The delight of the whimsical, artistically minded, and intergenerational community found at sub freezing temps has lured Sydney back year after year — as a volunteer, part of the Free Store Shanty Crew, and the back half of Lady Bear. They are looking forward to being part of the production team for a second year to bring shantastic art to the public, and to supporting the artists along the way!

Syd will work behind the scenes with shanty artists offering tips and advice, spill all the fun project details to our ASL interpreters and Audio Describers so they're ready to offer tours, dumpster dive into zero waste planning, diligently manage data (along with Ches - you’ll meet them soon!), and make some rad signage and graphics!

Please help us warmly (or, for the sake of current weather, cooly?) welcome Christina as our new Operations Director! 
❄️❤️🧊

Christina DeVries (she/they), is an artist, Minnesota transplant, and all season enthusiast. She hails from a long line of Minnesotans well versed in hard working, hot farm summers and cozy, book-reading winters. When she moved to Minneapolis nearly 10 years ago, she vowed to get a winter activity. Over the years this has included making soup, books and film, candle making and cat cuddles, and hosting annual holiday parties. When they first showed up on the ice at the Art Shanty village, they knew they’d found their type of winter wonderland activity: artsy, odd, bundled, and beautiful. During non-winter months, she spends her time biking, sewing, gardening, gathering with friends, and traveling.

She earned her Masters in Advocacy and Political Leadership from Metropolitan State University and has a professional background in fundraising, board leadership and coaching, and writing. She is a Community-Centric Fundraiser with an intersectional view on social justice and systemic structures. They currently serve on the Fair State Brewing Cooperative Board and recently founded Evie + Irene Creative, an organization focused on bringing resources, communities, and creative spirits together.

We’re in a period of transition this summer as we say goodbye to Kerri and welcome a new Operations Director (more on that tomorrow!)

THANK YOU for everything, KERRI! We appreciate you and wish you well in every new adventure that awaits!

Please read below for a gushing review of just a few reasons why we love her and will miss her ❤️

❄️😀🧊
 The Operations Director doesn’t always get much public attention (and Kerri might appreciate that, haha!), but we couldn’t let her leave without celebrating her contributions to the Art Shanty Projects team! 
Kerri led our operations during both years of public pandemic adaptations, easily rolling with new ways of working and smartly figuring out how to adapt systems under new parameters and constraints. She helped us nimbly and quickly adjust our logistics for Plan Beach last year, which included a healthy dose of last-minute decision-making as well as some actual heavy lifting and running of machinery! Of course she weathered all of this with a positive, can-do attitude alongside her sharp skills and hard work.

Under her leadership we increased connections with local businesses, strengthened our relationship with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (our hosts & permit people!), expanded our shanty season with activations at MNUFC and Springboard, and gained new community partners, among many other successes in refining our behind-the-scenes admin and operations.

If you see Kerri out & about, give her a high five or a hug!
