COMMUNITY BUILDS

Join shanty artists Alo Osberg and Andrew Young for Community Builds! Learn about timber framing and help create their project, Disinteshanty.

Attend one or both activities! On December 14 the artists will lead community in a test raising of their timber-framed shanty structure. On December 20 the community will help build timber frame in fill for their structure’s walls.

Both activities take place outdoors – dress for the weather!

ABOUT THE SHANTY:

a timber frame structure at night, with a fire burning in the back of it

Disinteshanty is a cozy timber framed cabin with a fireplace fueled by your decisions. Choose to stay warm by burning the building itself or stay warm by processing wood to rebuild the structure. Participants can pick up pry-bars and hammers or saws and froes– it’s up to you–will you create or will you destroy? Accessibility notes: Smoke from a wood-burning stove. Some upper body strength and hand-eye coordination may be needed to pry apart or build up this creation.

This Cultural Districts Arts Fund activation is funded, in part, by the City of Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs Department.
