ART SHANTY PROJECTS

Franconia Flash

Artists: Franconia Sculpture Park Franconia Flash is an interactive art experience inside a dazzle camouflage sculpture. After full dark immersion, participants will be 10,000x more sensitive to light. This night vision is due to an increase in visual purple—a light-sensitive chemical composed of retinal (a derivative of vitamin A) and the protein opsin. Finally, you are exposed to a series of flashes that generates an unexpected afterimage — a vision planted in your brain that remains for a long time.

Celebrating the nourishment and JOY that water bri Celebrating the nourishment and JOY that water brings, in all its forms. Happy #WorldWaterDay !

Art Shanty Projects stands in solidarity with the water protectors who are working daily across the state to stop the construction of Line 3 which is scheduled to carry tar sands oil under the Mississippi River and through many other life-giving fresh water resources and indigenous treaty land. As an organization we recognize that our artistic programming operates on indigenous (frozen) water and we have a desire and an obligation to help protect it. Video description: a short boomerang video loop of two bundled up people, covered in snow, on a frozen lake. One person kneels and the other sits with their legs stretched out in front of them. They both throw snow into the air like confetti, their arms dancing up and down as the short loop repeats. A third person’s mittens can be seen in the corner of the video, throwing more snow into the air towards them. The colorful shanty village and more visitors are behind them in the distance.
DREAMING OF NEXT WINTER ❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️For two weekends in late January / early February Art Shanty Projects hosted a design charrette with past artists to consider program adaptations related to the evolving guidelines and concerns brought forth by the pandemic and climate change.

Today we’re sharing the ideas of Robin Garwood (@robingarwood37), the artist who created Infrare Shanty in 2020. His imagined redesign turns his shanty into a smaller, more portable self-serve kiosk-style configuration that is easier to move in melting conditions, eliminates the need for artists to be inside, and reduces the close interactions between artists and visitors. The first few images are from our pre-pandemic 2020 program; the remaining images include his sketches and models from the charrette.

Many thanks to @wetpaintart for supplying artists with materials to help their imagining process! Visit them in person or online (with curbside pickup) for all your creative needs!

For more info on the Charrette process and our next steps, visit our website. Link is in our bio.

Stay tuned for more artist illustrations and ideas! Information on program changes - including new artist guidelines and the artist call - will be shared in late spring/early summer.

This activity was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Sending shanty love to the water protectors 💙❄️❤️💧We support you!

As an organization we recognize that our artistic programming operates on indigenous (frozen) water and we also have an obligation to help protect it. This winter we’ve been working with past artists to install shanties at Line 3 resistance camps. Gracious thanks to Oz Grinager, Sami Pfeffer, and Essie Schlotterbeck for donating the yurt from the Apologies of Archives and Pardons to this effort. (Pictured from recent platform building and yurt-raising weekends: board member Jason Buranen, staff members @sequoiahauck and @hotel_lavelle, builder friend John, and artists Sami and Essie).

Today we’re sharing the ideas of Ellie Hohulin (@elho9439), one of the artists behind Future Forest: Love Your Regional Parks. The first few pics show the exterior and (very cozy) interior experience of writing love letters to the parks from our pre-pandemic 2020 program (pics courtesy Free Truth Media); the following pics offer Ellie’s models on how this project could be redesigned to function in a pandemic - including a takeout-style window for engagement between artists and visitors, a mail slot, and interactive exterior displays (bonus pic: during the creative process Ellie biked to a frozen lake to refresh her memory and gain inspiration!)

While we have a LOT of decisions to make (and no formal program announcements just yet), in the coming days we’ll be sharing renderings from the imaginations of artists!

Today we’re sharing the ideas of Silvana Agostoni (@sagostoni) and Charles Buchwald, the artists behind @opticonshanty (a camera obscura shanty). The first few pics show the exterior and interior experience from our 2020 program; the other pics offer artist sketches of covid-conscious whimsical adaptations that include peep holes, viewports and webcams for off-site virtual engagement.

Look at those happy faces! This winter we had a zo Look at those happy faces! This winter we had a zoom reunion to start imagining our return to the ice next winter.

For two weekends in late January / early February Art Shanty Projects hosted a design charrette with 2020 artists to consider program adaptations related to the evolving guidelines and concerns brought forth by the pandemic and climate change.

While we have a LOT of decisions to make (and no formal program announcements just yet), in the coming days we’ll be sharing renderings from the imaginations of artists! In addition to our gorgeous participant faces in zoom tiles, today you’re looking at Angela Maki North’s illustration which was in response to the challenging question: ‘what if it’s not safe to invite visitors inside shanties?’ In her concept, artists are inside a clear shanty interacting through whimsical means with visitors on the outside. The lake is scattered with spectacles large and small, on ice and in air, lending a vibrant outdoor experience for visitors.

Happy Subzero Sunday! Three cheers for everyone wh Happy Subzero Sunday! Three cheers for everyone who kept the spirit of PLAY in the shanty village last year. We look forward to playing again together next winter in adapted ways.

For the past two weekends we have convened online with some past artists for a Design Charrette to start imagining what the 2022 event could look like. We can’t wait to share their ideas and creative adaptations to stay safe in ongoing pandemic times … stay tuned!

OK, so maybe sub-zero temperatures make it harder OK, so maybe sub-zero temperatures make it harder to enjoy winter, but they don’t make it impossible! 🥶 Raise your hand if you’ve been on ice with us in sub-zero temperatures 🙋🏻 Bundle up and trek through your neighborhood with new eyes, contribute to mutual aid campaigns to keep our unhoused neighbors warm, and curl up with loved ones and a warm beverage! ❄️ 🥶 ❤️
