Postal Shanty: Gabriel Welker and Caleb Peterson
This would be the Postal Shanty’s sophomore
year, given the privilege to return to the Medicine Lake community.
The Postal Shanty is more than just an aesthetic refuge from the cold. Our
shanty functions as a post office style service to the attendees of the exhibit
as well as the other project participants. It’s important to note that this service
is in no way affiliated with the similar service offered by the U.S. government.
The Postal Shanty is more or less a drop off and pick-up service of U.S. mail.
All trafficked through a U.S. postal P.O. box. Participants are encouraged to
create a piece of mail in the Postal Shanty. A P.S. attendant will then brand the
mail with our “mailed from the ice” stamps. The mail is then put in to U.S. Mail
circulation. Postage will be available to the participant for it’s face value. For
the benefit of the other Shanty participants, the P.S. will offer delivery service
to all of the other Shantys.
Our structure is a result of lessons learned from last year. Working space was
at a premium. The proposed 2008 design calls for double the foot print of last
year’s shanty. We also hope to incorporate a split level design. This serves to
contribute to the over all aesthetics of the structure. As well as help to define
the internal space. And as always. The structure comes equipped with an
after hours mail drop slot.
Re-cap of the 2007 season. Personally speaking the project made last winter
a memorable one. The experience strengthened relationships within the
Postal group. And more importantly provided the chance to meet a fun and
interesting group in the other shanty participants and attendees. With that
